### Exercise 1
**Question:** *How can we improve our memory?*
**Sample Answer:**
We can improve our memory by using creative techniques such as:
* Breaking information down into smaller chunks (chunking) and making personal associations.
* Visualising information and thinking in vivid images.
* Using mnemonics, silly rhymes, and songs.
* Using the method of «loci» (associating things with locations/furniture in a familiar room).
* Spacing out our learning instead of cramming, and using flashcards.
* Eating well, getting plenty of sleep, and doing regular exercise.
---
### Exercise 2 (RNE)
**Matching headings to paragraphs (1–5):**
* **1 — F (SEPARATE INTO BLOCKS)**
*Justification:* The paragraph talks about *«breaking down strings of information... into smaller chunks»*.
* **2 — E (THINKING IN PICTURES)**
*Justification:* The text advises to *«try thinking in images rather than words»* and *«picture Alice...»*.
* **3 — B WORD ASSOCIATION**
*Justification:* It discusses using *«mnemonics»*, *«rhyme, song or poem»* to remember difficult words or names.
* **4 — A LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!**
*Justification:* It explains the Roman technique *«loci»* (visualising rooms, places and furniture in a house).
* **5 — C PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT**
*Justification:* It discusses regular repetition and spaced learning: *«repeat them a few times, then take a break. Then come back to them»*.
*Extra heading:* **D (SEEK EXPERT ADVICE)**

### Exercise 3
**Phrasal verbs found in the text and example sentences:**
1. **let (sb) down** — подводить (кого-либо)
* *Sentence:* Don't worry, you can rely on me; I will never **let** you **down**.
2. **break down** — разбивать на части / анализировать
* *Sentence:* It's easier to solve a big problem if you **break** it **down** into smaller steps.
3. **come up with** — придумывать
* *Sentence:* She managed to **come up with** a brilliant idea for the school project.
4. **space out** — распределять во времени (делать интервалы)
* *Sentence:* You should **space out** your revision sessions over several weeks.
5. **come back (to)** — возвращаться (к чему-либо)
* *Sentence:* Let's take a short rest and **come back to** this exercise later.
---
### Exercise 4
1. **Remind** me to call John tonight! *(Напомни мне...)*
2. **Remember** to lock the front door! *(Не забудь / помни...)*
3. **Memorise** these 10 words for Monday. *(Выучи наизусть...)*
4. I can **recall** happy times playing in the park when I was young. *(Я могу припомнить / воскресить в памяти...)*
---
### Exercise 5
**a) How can we train our brains to remember things? Which techniques do you think can help you?**
* **Brain training explanation:** We can train our brains by actively engaging different types of memory: connecting new data to familiar ideas (chunking and personal connections), turning abstract words into bright visual pictures, inventing catchy rhymes (mnemonics), placing imaginary objects in familiar rooms (method of loci), and spacing our practice over time.
* **Personal opinion:** *In my opinion, the «chunking» and «spacing out» techniques can help me the most. When I study for an English exam, breaking long lists of vocabulary into blocks of 5–7 words and reviewing them with flashcards after short breaks helps me retain the material without stress.*
**b) ICT — Other memory techniques (for presentation to the class):**
* **The Storytelling Method:** Weave a list of unrelated words into a vivid, funny story. The plot helps your brain recall the words in the right order.
* **Mind Mapping:** Draw a diagram with central ideas branching out into details using colors, arrows, and sketches. It engages visual and spatial memory.
* **The Feynman Technique:** Try to explain the concept you are learning in simple terms as if you were teaching a younger child. If you get stuck, review the material again.
---
### Пояснения к правилам и лексике
* **Разница между глаголами памяти (Ex. 4):**
* **Remind (sb to do sth / of sth)** — *напоминать кому-то* (побуждать другого человека не забыть).
* **Remember (+ to-infinitive / -ing / that...)** — *помнить, не забывать* (самостоятельно удерживать в памяти).
* **Memorise** — *заучивать наизусть, целенаправленно учить* (слова, факты, стихотворение).
* **Recall** — *припоминать, воспроизводить в памяти* (события прошлого, детали, имена).
