The Yeoman Warders
A trip to London is never complete without a visit to the Tower of London. The site dates back to the 11th century and is guarded by the Yeoman warders, or
‘Beefeaters’.
King Henry VII first introduced Beefeaters in 1485 1) ..... he used them as bodyguards. Their duties included looking after the prisoners in the Tower and guarding the Crown Jewels. These days though, their main role is to act as guides for the many tourists 2) ..... visit the Tower every year. They also take care
of the eight big black ravens 3) ..... live in the tower.
There are 37 Yeoman Warders at the Tower, 4) ..... were in the armed forces for 22 years or more. They live in the Tower with their families. On 1st July 2007 a sendee woman, Moira Cameton, became the first female Yeoman Warder in the history of the institution.
The Beefeaters are most famous for their striking red and gold uniform, but they actually only wear this on formal occasions. Most of the time they wear a dark blue uniform with red trimmings.
No one is exactly sure 5) ..... the name ‘Beefeater’ comes from. One theory says that the warders used to be paid with meat instead of money! Others say that the name comes from the French word buffetier. Bulfetiers were guards in the palace of French Kings. They protected the King£ food.

They have two uniforms: a red and gold one for formal occasions and a dark blue one for everyday work. --- #### Exercise 6 (Writing an e-mail) **Subject:** Famous guards in Russia! Hi Ben, How are you? I'm writing to tell you about a famous place in my country where you can see guards in special uniforms. It is the Moscow Kremlin and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden in Moscow. There you can see the soldiers of the Presidential (Kremlin) Regiment. They wear very smart, historical dark blue and red uniforms with gold buttons and high caps. They look very disciplined and stand perfectly still. Their job is to guard the Kremlin, protect important state ceremonies, and take part in the Changing of the Guard ceremony, which is amazing to watch! Have you ever seen guards in special uniforms? Write back soon. Best wishes, Ivan --- ### Подробное объяснение и разбор заданий #### Exercise 1 * **Вопрос:** *Who are these men? Where do they work?* (Кто эти люди? --- #### Exercise 2 (Relative Pronouns / Adverbs) 1. **...in 1485 1) [when] he used them as bodyguards.** *Объяснение:* Относительное наречие времени **when** (когда) используется, так как перед ним стоит указание года (*1485*). 2. **...for the many tourists 2) [that] visit the Tower...** *Объяснение:* Местоимение **that** заменяет людей (*tourists*) в определительном придаточном предложении. 3. **...the eight big black ravens 3) [that] live in the tower.** *Объяснение:* С животными (*ravens* — вороны) используется местоимение **that** (или *which*). 4. **...37 Yeoman Warders at the Tower, 4) [who] were in the armed forces...** *Объяснение:* Относительное местоимение **who** (которые) относится к людям (*Yeoman Warders*). 5. **No one is exactly sure 5) [where] the name 'Beefeater' comes from.** *Объяснение:* Устойчивый оборот *come from* (происходить откуда-то) сочетается с вопросительным наречием **where** (откуда). --- #### Exercise 3 (True / False / Not Stated) 1. **T (True):** В первом абзаце сказано: *«...the Tower of London. The site ... is guarded by the Yeoman Warders...»* (Лондонский Тауэр охраняется стражниками). 2. **T (True):** В тексте указано: *«King Henry VII first introduced Beefeaters in 1485»*. **F (False):** В тексте говорится: *«...their main role is to act as guides for the many tourists»* (их главная роль — быть гидами для туристов, то есть они помогают туристам). 4.
